4 Ways to Sleep Better with Sinus Pain

Allergies make the sinuses more prone to infection by causing the nasal tissues to swell and by blocking drainage of the sinus channels. This creates the perfect place for bacteria to grow.
Although most sinus infections resolve on their own and do not require treatment with antibiotics, this illness can certainly interfere with your sleep habits. Sinus symptoms such as facial pressure, a stuffy nose and nasal discharge often worsen at night. Some people also report tooth pain. To help you get a better night’s sleep with sinusitis, follow these expert tips.
- Take an antihistamine before bed. Antihistamines counter allergy symptoms such as sneezing and runny nose. Because one of the common side effects of certain antihistamines is drowsiness, taking them before bedtime can help you sleep even better.
- Elevate your head. When you are congested, lying flat allows mucus and blood flow to build up in the sinuses, increasing pressure and interfering with breathing. Adding an extra pillow to your bed so that your head is raised above your heart can do wonders for your sleep.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Both contribute to congestion by dehydrating your body, which worsens sinus pain. Caffeine is also a stimulant which makes it harder to sleep. In the afternoon and evening, quench your thirst with water or decaffeinated drinks instead of those containing alcohol or caffeine.
- Keep nasal passages hydrated. Nasal moisture helps to clear out mucus and makes it easier to breathe. Saline nasal spray will keep sinuses clear during the day, and a neti pot can be used to rinse out the nose before bed. Using a humidifier while you sleep may also be helpful to keep airways moist.
