Family Corner: Take the Bite Out of Summer
Summer is the time for families to kick back, relax and have fun, but it can also be a time of discomfort and illness if the proper precautions are not taken. Start the season by reminding your family members of the importance of protecting their skin from sunburn and damage caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. Broad-spectrum sunscreens with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 protect skin from approximately 97% of UVA rays and 97% of UVB rays.

Beat the Heat: Stay Hydrated
Be sure to increase your fluid intake when temperatures rise. Your body needs extra water to produce the sweat that cools the skin and keeps the body from overheating. Drink at least every half-hour to ensure you are replacing lost fluids. If there is too little water within the body, bodily functions are affected and you could experience problems ranging from weakness to life-threatening illnesses such as heat stroke. Adequate hydration, or replacement of water in your body, is extremely important to keep you healthy and active all summer long.
