Make Your Health a Priority During National Women’s Health Week

National Women’s Health Week, an initiative led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, begins on Mother’s Day each year. During 2017, National Women’s Health Week will run May 14-20. In conjunction with this observance, RediClinic health clinics encourage women to take care of themselves and make their health a priority.

Steps You Can Take for Better Health

Many factors play a role in a woman’s overall health. Here’s what you can do to lead a healthier life at any age!

  • Schedule a yearly well-woman exam. Visit a healthcare provider to receive regular check-ups and preventive screenings that can find problems before they become life-threatening. Most private health plans include coverage for well-woman exams. Free or low-cost exams are available to those who do not have health coverage; check with your local health department.
  • Eat healthy. What you eat greatly influences your health. Proper nutrition can help prevent or control conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. For guidance on how to plan a healthy diet, go to choosemyplate.gov. And with summer around the corner, light eating is a must – here’s a healthy recipe from Eating Well to add to your summer menu.
  • Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity. Daily exercise keeps your weight under control and lowers the risk of some diseases, including heart disease – the leading cause of death for American women. Learn more about the amount of exercise you need each day to enjoy long-term health benefits.
  • Get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Sleep is critical to health, and sleep deprivation can worsen a number of health problems. The recommended amount of sleep for adults is seven to eight hours a day.
  • Reach and maintain a healthy weight. If you need to achieve weight loss, focus on losing one pound per week by setting manageable diet and exercise goals and making serious lifestyle and nutrition changes.
  • Get help to quit or don’t start smoking. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease and many types of cancer. Health improvements begin on the first day you stop smoking.
  • Limit alcohol use to one drink or less. Drink in moderation. For women, this means no more than one drink a day. One drink is equal to 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor.
  • Wear a helmet when riding a bike and wear protective gear for sports.
  • Wear a seatbelt in cars and don’t text and drive.

Here’s a healthy recipe from Eating Well to add to your summer menu. Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

Braised Green Beans & Summer Vegetables

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

1 small onion, halved and sliced

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh oregano, or 1 teaspoon dried

½ cup white wine, or reduced-sodium chicken broth

1 pound green beans, trimmed

1 medium summer squash, or zucchini, halved and cut into 1-inch pieces

1 cup halved cherry tomatoes, or grape tomatoes

¼ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper

¼ cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and oregano and cook, stirring, until softened and beginning to brown, about 2 minutes. Add wine (or broth) and bring to a boil. Add green beans, reduce heat to a simmer, cover and cook for 10 minutes, stirring once or twice. Add summer squash (or zucchini) and tomatoes and continue cooking until the vegetables are tender, 8 to 10 minutes more. Season with salt and pepper. Serve sprinkled with Parmesan. Makes 6 servings.
