National Nutrition Month®, sponsored each year by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, was established in 1980 in response to growing public interest in nutrition. National Nutrition Month promotes education and awareness on the importance of making smart food choices and developing sound eating and exercise habits. The theme for 2016 is “Savor the Flavor of Eating Right.”

With the theme of “Savor the Flavor of Eating Right,” the Academy is encouraging Americans to take time to appreciate the flavors and social experiences food can add to our lives. Here are some suggestions on how to accomplish these goals!
- Enjoy food traditions. From nightly family dinners to holiday gatherings, food plays a central role in our lives. Make family meals a priority and enjoy the food traditions that accompany any type of social gathering.
- Appreciate the eating experience. In today’s world, we often consume food quickly and mindlessly. Researchers have found that you may eat fewer calories over the course of a meal when you eat slowly, so chew more and take the time to appreciate the flavors and textures of your food. You will feel more satisfied when the meal is over.
- Be a mindful eater. Rather than eating in response to emotional stress or out of habit, the goal of mindful eating is to listen to our bodies’ hunger cues and eat intentionally. Taking the time to savor and enjoy your food, without distractions, can be part of a healthy diet that leads to an overall healthier lifestyle.
- Consult medical professionals. Trained healthcare professionals can educate you about nutrition so that your individual health and nutrient needs are met on your journey to weight loss and better health.
