When to Get a Sports Physical for Spring Sports
With spring sports seasons just around the corner, you may have a child that needs a school sports physical. Although many schools offer sports physicals at the beginning of the school year in hopes of covering many sports and getting paperwork requirements out of the way, this approach may not be optimal for all athletes.
Timing is Important for Sports Physicals
According to the American College of Sports Medicine and many other medical organizations, the best timing for a sports physical is at least six weeks before the start of preseason practice for the respective sports season. This allows time to further evaluate and treat any problems that are discovered during the physical. Planning ahead for a physical also encourages athletes who are not conditioned to get in shape, reducing the chance for injury once practice begins.
If a sports physical is completed less than six weeks before the start of the season, some athletes may not have time to become conditioned or to recover from treatment. On the other hand, if your child had a sports physical months ago, other conditions may have since developed and the findings of the first evaluation may no longer be current.
